Why Rogaland is One of Europe’s Best Cycling Destinations

Stavanger sits at the heart of one of the world’s great cycling regions. Rogaland – ranked 4th on Lonely Planet’s global list of most beautiful cycling – offers a staggering variety of terrain within a single day’s ride: fjord-side switchbacks, open coastal plains, island loops, and mountain plateaus. Norway Bike Experience is Stavanger’s specialist guided cycling tour operator, and we exist for one reason: to show you this landscape at its very best, from the saddle.

Whether you are an experienced road cyclist chasing the legendary Lysebotn climb, a family looking for a relaxed coastal roll along Jæren, or a group of friends wanting a multi-day adventure through the fjords – our expert local guides, professional bikes, and fully supported tour formats are designed around you.

Few regions in Europe pack so much cycling variety into such a compact area. From the heart of Stavanger city, you are within a 30-minute ride of wide, flat coastal paths along the North Sea, and within 90 minutes of the Lysebotn wall – one of the most demanding and spectacular road climbs on the continent. Here is what makes this region unique:

  • Terrain variety – flat coastal routes on Jæren, dramatic fjord climbs at Lysebotn, island loops in Ryfylke, and rolling farmland on the Jæren plateau
  • World-class road infrastructure – Norway invests heavily in cycling infrastructure and road surfaces are consistently excellent
  • Low traffic – outside the city, many routes see very few cars, especially the mountain roads to Lysebotn and Sirdal
  • Iconic landmarks on your route – Pulpit Rock (Preikestolen), Lysefjorden, Kjerag, and the Swords in Rock monument are all reachable by bike
  • The Tour of Norway – professional cycling’s most spectacular race finishes and starts in this region every May; our guides include former Tour of Norway organisers and riders
  • Sola Airport (SVG) access – just 4.5km from our base, making Stavanger one of the easiest cycling destinations in Europe to reach with your own bike.

Our Guided Cycling Tour Formats

We offer three distinct guided tour experiences, from our entry-level Standard Guided tours to our fully-comprehensive Ultimate Guided packages:

Standard Guided Tours

Join one of our experienced local guides on a set route of your choice. Your guide leads the way, manages the pace, and handles any mechanical issues. Standard guided tours are available on most of our routes and can be arranged for groups of 2 or more. Ideal for cyclists who want local knowledge and company without the full logistics package.

Ultimate Guided Tours

Our flagship experience. Ultimate Guided tours include everything: a dedicated professional guide with expert local knowledge, premium Ridley Fenix or Trek Madone road bikes, hand-picked accommodation at carefully selected hotels, luggage transfer between hotels every night, local food experiences, and a support vehicle available for the full duration. Your guide washes your cycling kit each evening so you start every day fresh. These tours are genuinely hands-off – all you do is ride.

Hub Riding

Stay in one excellent base hotel – centrally located in the Stavanger region – and set off on a different guided route each day. This format is perfect for those who want variety without packing and unpacking, and is ideal for longer stays.

Peak season is June to August, with the longest daylight hours (up to 20 hours) and warmest temperatures.
