In March 1980, what began as an ordinary day on the Alexander L. Kielland oil platform in the North Sea turned into a devastating disaster when the rig capsized, claiming the lives of more than 100 people. To honor the victims of Norway’s worst oil industry accident, a memorial was built along Stavanger’s rugged coastline. Named Brutt Lenke, its focal point is a striking sculpture of three broken chains, symbolically facing the North Sea—the very waters where the tragedy unfolded.
This is a route on mostly gravel roads and is not recommended for road bike. The routes partly follows narrow trails along the fjords for the first 5 km to Røyneberg and also from Hafrsfjord 10km to Kvernevik 19km to the sculpture Broken Chain. At some places it`s recommended to walk with the bike for safety reasons.
