Island-Hopping by Bike at Ombo & Finnøy.
Set out on an unforgettable cycling adventure among the charming islands of Ombo and Finnøy, where lush landscapes, towering peaks, and local flavors await. To make the most of your day, we recommend an early departure from Stavanger—giving you ample time to explore these scenic gems.
Ombo – Where Mountains Meet the Sea
Your first stop is Ombo, an island with variated nature and winding roads. From Eidsund, the cycling route around the island covers approximately 22 kilometers, offering breathtaking coastal views and peaceful countryside. Be prepeared for some climbs since the terrain is quite hilly. We reccommend e-bike if you are not used to bike in hilly terrain.
For those seeking a challenge, a hike up Bandåsen, Stavanger’s highest mountain at 513 meters above sea level, is an absolute must. Park your bike at the end of the road at Seltveit, and from there, follow the 3-kilometer round-trip trail to the summit. The reward? A panoramic view stretching across the Ryfylke archipelago—an unforgettable sight! You need to plan for at least 5 hours on the island if you want to do the hike.
Before continuing your journey, you can stop by the Joker store on the island, open every day (with limited hours on Sundays), to stock up on snacks and refreshments.
Finnøy – The Island of Tomatoes and Hidden Treasures
Next, you’ll board the ferry to Finnøy, arriving at Judaberg, the island’s lively center. Here, you have two cycling options: take the full 21-kilometer loop around the island or opt for a shorter route by crossing straight through.
Finnøy is famous for its tomato production, and no visit is complete without a stop at Lauvsnes garden, where you can get a taste of the freshest local produce. History buffs should make their way to Tyskerhålene, hidden war-era tunnels that whisper stories of the past.
For a taste of Finnøy’s local charm, we recommend visiting Gardsbutikken on Nærland, a cozy farm shop filled with local goods. And before you leave, don’t miss a stop at Kaihuset in Judaberg, where you can try the island’s specialty—gong cakes. Trust us, it’s worth it!
With the wind in your hair and the sea always within sight, this island-hopping bike tour promises an adventure full of discovery, nature, and delicious local treats.
